Romsey Bounce Back - Market to reopen from Friday 22nd May
The most important thing on all our minds at the moment is keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe.
Throughout the crisis some Romsey stores have remained open to serve our community, these include food, pharmacy, hardware shops and banks. Now we are seeing a small but growing number of our pubs and cafes joining the fish & chip and piazza shops to offer a takeaway or home delivery service.
We closed the regular market on the day of lockdown, although the food stalls could have remained open. We felt with the lower footfall and the requirement for social diancing the sensible option, at that time, was to close it completely. The time has come for a limited reopening, social distancing will be much easier in the market than in shops and we expect everyone to follow the guide lines and to act with responsibility for their safety and that of others.
From this Friday 22nd May stalls supplying food will open, we are expecting two stalls initially (soft fruits and olives) and if all goes well, we will build from that number over coming weeks. Currently there are discussions going on nationally to resolve a problem that plant stalls are not permitted to open which given Garden Centres are open and plant stalls can operate within indoor markets is difficult to understand.
We must stress that this decision will be kept under review and will be modified as UK Government changes its guidance.
Cornmarket, Romsey every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 3pm
There has been a market in Romsey for over 400 years which was originally operated under Royal Charter granted in 1607. Rights to hold the markets are retained by the owners of Broadlands Estate as "Lord of the Manor". On 2nd May 2019 Romsey Town Council announced the signing of a new agreement to ensure a successful future for Romsey Market. The agreement allows the market to operate under the joint management of Romsey Town Council and Bradbeers for the next 15 years.

Romsey Market is held in the Cornmarket, Romsey every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 3pm. It currently has an eclectic mix of traders trading on one or more of the days, stalls include flowers, bread, olives, mobile phone repairs and accessories, pies and sausages, soap, fresh fish, bike repairs, cards and clothing. We encourage even more potential traders to test their product with the public through the low-cost option of a market stall.
The Town Council would be pleased to receive comments and ideas from the public related to the market, and to speak with potential new traders. For further information please contact Mark Edgerley, Romsey Town Centre Manager on 07850 449484 or email email@example.com
